Why limescale returns to your shower screen within days

You clean the shower screen, it looks perfect, and within days the white haze is back. It isn't that you're cleaning badly: you're cleaning a surface that keeps absorbing.

Glass isn't smooth

To the eye, glass looks like a perfectly smooth surface. Under a microscope it's something else: full of microscopic pores, irregularities in the material itself.

Shower water gets into those pores. When it evaporates, the water leaves but the minerals it carried — calcium and magnesium above all — stay behind inside. Add soap residue and skin oils.

Every shower leaves a little more. It isn't dirt sitting on top: it's mineral embedded within.

Why scrubbing only solves half of it

A glass cleaner or limescale remover takes away what protrudes from the pores. The glass looks clear and the problem seems solved.

But the pores are still open — and in many cases more open than before: harsh limescale removers and scouring pads gradually wear the surface, widening the pores and creating micro-scratches where limescale grips even better.

Hence the feeling that it takes more effort each time and returns sooner. That isn't imagination. The glass is in worse condition than it was two years ago.

In Spain the problem is worse

Much of the country has hard or very hard water — high in calcium and magnesium. The harder the water, the more mineral is left behind after each evaporation.

In very hard water areas a screen can be hazed again within three or four days. In soft water areas the same screen lasts weeks.

Home remedies and their limits

Vinegar. It works: a mild acid that dissolves surface limescale. But it doesn't reach the mineral embedded deeper, and used daily it eventually attacks silicone seals and aluminium profiles.

Lemon, bicarbonate. Same as vinegar, with the same limitation.

A squeegee after every shower. This is the most effective home method of all, because it removes the water before it can evaporate. The catch is that it has to happen every time, by everyone who uses the shower, without exception.

Aggressive chemical descaler. It cleans, but it accelerates surface wear — and with it, the cycle.

The other way to approach it

If the problem is that the glass absorbs, there are two logical steps: get out what's already in, then close the pores.

First, clean deeply. Surface cleaning isn't enough: the mineral lodged in the pores has to be drawn out. Glass with years of use needs this step before anything else.

Then protect. Here there's an important distinction that almost nobody explains.

A coating is applied on top of the glass as a layer. It works well at first and wears away with use and cleaning — typically somewhere between a few months and a year.

An impregnation treatment doesn't sit on top: it integrates into the glass itself, closing the pores. There's no layer to wear away, because the property becomes part of the material. The glass doesn't change in appearance; it simply stops absorbing.

With the pores closed, water beads and runs off instead of sitting and evaporating. And what doesn't stay, doesn't leave limescale.

What to expect, realistically

No treatment means a shower screen never needs cleaning again. What changes is the effort: from scrubbing with descaler every week to wiping with water now and then.

And if the glass is already scratched or etched from years of harsh products, worth knowing: physical damage doesn't reverse. You can stop the deterioration, not undo it.
